Venezuelan Economic Crisis makes the citizens buy rotten meat and the women to be prostitutes

MARACAIBO, - The economic crisis that hit Venezuela opens up a reality where there are citizens of a city who are forced to buy rotten meat. AP via Newsweek reported Thursday (08/23/2018) that rotten meat was sold in the city of Maracaibo after a power cut made the refrigerator unusable. "Of course they eat it. Thanks to (President Nicolas) Maduro. Food for the poor is rotten meat," said Johel Prieto, one of the butchers.

Prieto said electricity had been cut off since nine months ago in a city known for its oil richness. Yeudis Luna, one of the residents of Maracaibo said, the taste of the meat was a little strange when she ate it with her three children. "However, it will feel a little better if you add lemon and vinegar," Luna said. She claimed to have been worried if the meat would make them sick. "I am more worried about my children because they are still small. However, only the youngest have diarrhea," she continued. In addition to rotten meat, some regions in Venezuela also experience a lack of water which results in power outages. One of them was Ligthia Marrero, who lived in San Cristobal, the capital of Tachira State, told Reuters.

Marrero said, because of the reduced level of water making the hydroelectric generator cannot function. He explained that he had a day where he had not received electricity for 14 days. "On the previous day, we only experienced a six-hour power failure," he explained.

The economic crisis which also caused social problems makes the women had to be prostitutes. In a Sky News report Friday (08/25/2018), in a border club in the city of Cucuta, Colombia, the majority of sex workers are Venezuelans. Whereas in a brothel containing 60 women, only two sex workers were Colombians, the rest were Venezuelan women
One of them is a woman who was a ballerina and businessman. She said she had no other job options. "This is a shameful job. However, what else do I have? I have to continue to raise my two children," she said.

"The only way to keep feeding my children is to go to Colombia, and sell my body," the woman said. Another woman who shared the same experience used to work as a hairdresser. She said, if there were only other employment options, she would gladly go straight out of the world of prostitution. The mother of a one-year-old son said she did not drink alcohol or take drugs.

"I became a prostitute. I did it because I had to. If there were other jobs, I would go straight out," she said. The two women continued, they felt limited and helpless because they did not have legal documents to work in other countries. Venezuela, a country formerly known as one of the richest in Latin America, hyperinflation of up to 1 million percent in 2018. So high inflation caused prices of staple goods to skyrocket out of control, made President Nicolas Maduro's government issue new currency.
