Poll 57% of Arab youth assume the US as an enemy


DUBAI, - A survey institute based in the United Arab Emirates presents data on the political views of the young Arab generation. Reported by Arab News Tuesday (8/5/2018), as many as 57 % of the young Arab generation that considers the United States (US) as an enemy rather than allies. The survey was made by ASDA'A Burson-Marsteller Arab Youth Survey Middle East, the largest public opinion institution in the Middle East and North Africa. ASDA'A collected samples from 3,500 young people aged between 18-24 years in 16 Arab countries in early 2018.

In addition to viewing the US as an enemy, ASDA'A also presents data of 20 percent of youth in the Arab region making Russia at the top of the desired non-Arab allies.

For the first time, the US in an ASDA'A poll was thrown out of the top five favorite allies by being ranked 11th. Antipathy against the United States is so strong in the Levant, the Eastern Mediterranean region of Cyprus, to Syria, where 31% favor Russia and only 15% for the US. That fact is inversely proportional to the 2016 survey. At that time, 25 % of the Arab youth still wanted the United States as an ally than Russia that received only 9 %.

Since Donald Trump became President of the United States it is considered the cause why the younger generation in Arabs regards Washington as an enemy. In the survey, nearly 75% of the generation thought Trump's election had a negative impact on the Arab region, while only 7% thought otherwise. Trump's victory in the 2016 US presidential election is seen as negative news. Beating news such as falling world oil prices, or armed conflict in Yemen.

During the two years following the survey, President Trump again focused on the region. In the eyes of observers, this condition is different when Obama who began to reduce US influence on the Arab world. Furthermore, 78% of respondents believe the group of Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) is getting weaker, 68% confident with the country's ability in fighting terrorism. 58% of respondents believe that ISIS and its ideology will be destroyed. While 18% are still convinced they will be a threat despite a loss of territory.
