Malaysia's opposition leader, Mahathir Mohamad, will be sworn in as Prime Minister (PM) of Malaysia on Thursday (10/5). At the age of 92, Mahathir will be sworn in as the 7th Malaysian Prime Minister.
As quoted by the Bernama and Reuters office on Thursday (10/05/2018), Mahathir will be sworn in after the Pakatan Harapan opposition coalition (PH) led by the Malaysian Electoral Commission (EC) which gave the final result announcement on Thursday (10/5) ) at dawn.
The final election results announced by EC Chairman Hashim Abdullah, as reported by Bernama, show the superiority of the PH coalition in the acquisition of parliamentary seats or People's Councils. Hashim said the coalition of PH won 113 seats out of the 222-seat Council of the People contested. Meanwhile, the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition has only 79 seats, falling sharply from the 2013 election with 132 seats.
The number of 113 seats in the Malaysian parliament obtained by the PH coalition is enough to form a government.
Bernama also reported that the dominance of the PH coalition in the Malaysian parliament is expected to strengthen with the joining of the Sabah Parti who won 8 seats and announced it will be allied with the PH at the federal level.
Mahathir's inauguration will take place on Thursday (10/5) as well. Reuters said Mahathir will become history as the world's oldest PM after he was sworn in later.
Mahathir served as Malaysia's 4th PM and became the longest-serving from 1981-2003. In this election, Mahathir managed to lead the opposition to a historic victory. The first-ever opposition in history defeated the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition since it won independence from Britain in 1957.
The BN coalition is dominated by the United Malays National Organization (UMNO), Malaysia's largest party, which once housed Mahathir. In this election, Mahathir defeated the UMNO he had led for two decades.
Mahathir quit UMNO in 2016 and formed a new party called the Unified Indigenous People of Malaysia (PPBM). He coalesced with his former political rival, Anwar Ibrahim, who is also a prominent Malaysian opposition figure to oust Prime Minister Najib Razak of Malaysia.
Mahathir, who was a mentor of Najib, continued to criticize after Najib mentioned the scandal involving mega corruption 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB). Najib has denied any violation of the law.
