US will help rebuild North Korean economy if the denuclearization goes well

The US will help rebuild the North Korean economy if it agrees to surrender its nuclear weapons, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said.

The US will "be ready to work with North Korea to achieve prosperity equal to our South Korean friends", he told reporters on Friday.

Pompeo, who has just returned from Pyongyang, said he has held "good" talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

The two leaders, who previously exchanged cursing and threats, then made the announcement after an important meeting between North and South Korea in April.

What does Pompeo say?

"If Kim chooses the right path, there is a future full of peace and prosperity for the people of North Korea," he said after meeting South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha in Washington on Friday.

Pompeo urged Pyongyang to take "bold action to denuclearize quickly".

But he stressed that it would require a "strong verification" program by the US and other countries.

During his surprise visit to North Korea this week, Pyongyang freed three US detainees.

Some observers claim to be worried about South Korea's desire to build a peace bond with the North that will shift away over time from US policy seeking to achieve nuclear disarmament by any means.

Pompeo added that the US will stick with its plan to help develop the North Korean economy that has been devastated by its own management mistakes, coupled with the impact of international sanctions.

Pompeo has met North Korea several times, including with Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un. One meeting was held to prepare for a summit between the two leaders of the United States and North Korea. As well as last week, when he negotiated with Kim to release three Korean-Americans who have been detained in a North Korean prison.

According to Pompeo from several meetings, Kim is the figure of a focus and rational discussion. "We have a good conversation, a conversation involving complicated issues

Pompeo also discussed further steps and required preparations including remuneration benefits to be provided if North Korea is ready to denuclearize.

" I am sure we have the same understanding of the outcomes that leaders, President Trump, Chairman Kim, and President Moon (Jae-in) expected," he said. "I think we have the same vision for what we expect and there is agreement on the same end goal," Pompeo said.
