Pope denounces Trump's Policy on Separation of Immigrant Families

Pope Francis denounced the US President Donald Trump's 'no-tolerance' policy that led to the separation of families on the border with Mexico.

Pope Francis supports the US Catholic bishops who call the separation children from parents is contrary to Catholic values and immoral.

"It's not easy, but populism is not a solution," Pope Francis said late Sunday.

Under Trump's policy, authorities may indict immigrants caught crossing the Mexican border illegally. While adults are in jail, their children are sent to government shelters.

The policy issued provoked criticism in the United States after video and audio recordings that allegedly portrayed children being held in concrete-floored homes and crying because they were far from their parents.

The US bishops united their voices with other religious leaders also condemned the policy.

"I am on side of the bishops 'conference, so it is clear that in these cases I respect the (position) of the bishops' conference," Pope said.

The Pope leads a church that has 1.3 billion members worldwide and is a Christian denomination in the United States.

The Pope says populism 'creates psychosis' on the issue of immigration. Even civilizations that have advanced like Europe without immigration will only become empty land, he said.

The statement was also made shortly after the Italian populist government denied port access to non-government ships that saved African asylum seekers.

"I believe that you can not reject people who come in. You have to accept them, help them, take care of them, accompany them and then see where to put them," the Pope said.

"Creating psychosis is not the cure." Populism does not solve many things. "
