To rival Tesla, Maserati team up with Ferrari in the electric vehicle

Piedmont, Italy - Leaders of luxury vehicle brands of Fiat Group Chrysler, Maserati, said it is exploring exclusive cooperation with Ferrari to launch vehicles in the next five years, including an electric version, in order to compete with Tesla as a manufacturer of electric cars.

Maserati's leader Timothy Kuniskis said it was discussing an exclusive deal with Ferrari in terms of future powertrains that include hybrid vehicles, plug-in hybrids, and fully electric cars while eliminating the use of diesel engines gradually.

Ferrari is part of the Fiat Chrysler group until 2016 which is equally led by CEO Sergio Marchionne.

Maserati will introduce two new vehicles in the five-year plan, including an electric supercar named "Alfieri", which is claimed to accelerate from 0-100 kilometers per hour in just two seconds.

Mentioned, Maserati not only introduced the supercar but will launch new vehicles that are functional like SUV.

"With a fully electric-powered supercar, we may look like we're to beat  Tesla," Kuniskis told AP on Saturday (2/6).

He revealed that Maserati is targeting sales of 100,000 cars per year with a 15 percent margin by 2022, from sales of 2017 to 50,000 units.
