CIA Candidate Director Gina Haspel Promises Stop Torture of Terrorist Detainees

CIA candidate Gina Haspel, who was nominated by Donald Trump, said she would not continue the torture program in interrogation and detention as it had been after 9/11.

Gina Haspel's statement was issued during a meeting with the Senate intelligence commission. Haspel rejected the torture used for interrogating terrorist prisoners.

"I have this related opinion and I want this to be clear.I have served in the midst of a period of controversy and I offer my commitment, clear and unconditional, under my leadership, the CIA will not implement the program of detention and interrogation," said Gina Haspel as quoted by the Associated Press, May 10, 2018.

Haspel's pledge goes against Donald Trump's statement that during the campaign calls for torture to combat terrorists. But Trump has not taken a serious step in his statement in the campaign since taking office.

Donald Trump appointed Gina Haspel to become a director of the CIA and praised Haspel for decades in the field of intelligence. Trump also said the Democrats objected because Haspel would crack down hard on terrorists.

Haspel promised to work more closely with the supervision of the Senate commission. He will put more intelligence staff abroad, improve foreign language proficiency, and strengthen ties with US allies. If elected, Gina Haspel became the first woman to lead the CIA.

Now Haspel is awaiting approval of his candidacy in the intelligence commission, after which it will be elected by the whole Senate vote. The majority of Republicans approved Gina Haspel's candidacy.
