Flash Flood Strikes Ellicott City Maryland, Emergency status Declared



BALTIMORE - Main streets in various cities in the state of Maryland, United States (US) submerged by flash floods. Governor Larry Hogan declared a state of emergency in the region and urged people not to travel.

Emergency status for the state of Maryland was announced by Governor Hogan via Twitter on Monday (5/28/2018). He instructed local emergency agencies and other states to help reduce the impact of disasters.

Hogan said he was on his way to Ellicott City, the worst hit area of flash floods.

"I have spoken with Howard County Executive Allan Kittleman and are currently headed to Ellicott City, I have directed MDMEMA (Maryland Emergency Management Agency) to help in any possible capacity, and many other state agencies provide support. emergency, "Hogan wrote via @GovLarryHogan account.

Residents in Ellicott City and Baltimore are busy to save themselves shortly after the heavy rain triggered flash floods since Sunday local time.

"This is a very dangerous and very difficult situation, and you have to move to high ground immediately and stay away from anywhere where the water moves," the Baltimore National Weather Service said in a statement.

According to the Howard County government, Ellicott City, located just 55 meters (180 feet) above sea level, flooded on the same scale as it did in 2016. Just to note, flash floods in Maryland in 2016 caused severe damage that devastated the center history city, affecting many famous homes, businesses and tourist attractions, as well as killing two people.

Until Sunday night,  state of emergency status has been extended to include areas along the Patapsco River at Anne Arundel County, as well as all Howard and Baltimore.
