CNN - The Chinese Air Force landed some of its nuclear bombers on several islands in the South China Sea. This activity is part of Beijing's military exercises in the disputed waters.
"The division of the People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) recently held a practice takeoff and landing a number of bombers such as the H-6K islands and reefs in the South China Sea," the military statement said China on Friday (18 / 5).
"The exercise was carried out to improve China's military capabilities reach across the region, strike anytime and anywhere."
China calls the military air exercises that can carry a nuclear bomb was conducted in preparation for the "battle of the South China Sea and the Western Pacific".
Beijing declared the pilots H-6K doing exercises attacks on several targets in the waters. They also do exercises landings and takeoffs on small islands in the region.
China insists the exercises are to defense. Beijing also stressed its armed forces can do whatever it wants in its own territory.
The US condemned the military exercises as an attempt by China asserted its claim to the waters rich in mineral resources. Beijing claims at issue for the region is still in dispute with Taiwan, the Philippines, Vietnam, Brunei, and Malaysia.
"The US remains committed to the Indo-Pacific region that is free and open," said Pentagon spokesman Lt. Col. Christopher Logan told Reuters.
"We've got the same report and militarization of China in the South China Sea waters disputed only raise tensions in the region."
Meanwhile, some members of the Philippine congress think China's ongoing militarization is a form of negligence of President Rodrigo Duterte's government.
However, so far Duterte has defended its position to not conflict with China. Unlike the previous administration, Duterte reaffirmed his desire to explore and develop jointly China in the South China Sea.
