The city of San Francisco, USA, for the first time in history, will be led by a black woman - just when the African-American population has declined in number in a city that continues to improve.
The journey of a woman named London Breed to be the mayor is remarkable, considering she was raised in poverty by her grandmother in a social settlement.
Winning with a slight vote above 50%, this 43-year-old woman said she felt very honored.
With this breakthrough, Breed became the only woman who became mayor among the 15 largest cities in the US.
San Francisco is now being to overcome with a lot of homeless people and the streets full of rubbish which resemble slums in developing countries, and the explosion of property prices in many families of workers were knocked out of the city.
Earlier London Breed served as chair of the Supervisory Board of San Francisco, the city's legislative board.
Breed also served as mayor's executive officer for some time, following the death of Mayor Ed Lee in December, before finally becoming the definitive mayor.
The election took place on June 5, but the announcement of the election results was delayed as the result was so tight that city election committee officials should count again thousands of temporary ballots used during the election.
Her rival, Mark Leno, who if won will become the city's first gay mayor, recognizes the tough competition between the two.
Breed is not the first female mayor of San Francisco. Previously there was Dianne Feinstein who became the first female mayor in 1978. She is now a California senator.
Now Breed joins a small club of 19 black female mayors in the United States.
She will lead San Francisco, a city of only 5% African Americans, and most live in social settlements, writes the San Francisco Chronicle.
Living in San Francisco during her lifetime, Breed took a degree at the University of California, Davis, before earning a master's degree in public administration at the University of San Francisco in 2012.
She started her career in city government as an apprentice before climbing the stairs to the mayor's seat.
